New or Out-of-Province Vehicle Registrations
Registering a new vehicle
Registering a brand new (or new to you) vehicle must be done in person at one of our Drayden registry locations.
To register, you must provide your:
- Proof of valid Alberta insurance (pink card)
- Signed proof of ownership.
- Proof of identity. See our Acceptable ID page for more information on this requirement.
- NVIS (New Vehicle Information Statement) for a brand new vehicle.
- A completed Vehicle Authorization Form if all the buyers listed on the bill of sale are not present in office. This form can also be used if you are registering the vehicle on someone else’s behalf. Instructions for properly filling out the form are provided here.
Registering a vehicle from outside of Alberta
Registering an out-of-province vehicle must be done in person at one of our Drayden registry locations.
To register, you must provide your:
- Proof of valid Alberta insurance (pink card)
- Original out-of-province registration or signed proof of ownership.
- Proof of identity. See our Acceptable ID page for more information on this requirement.
- A completed Vehicle Authorization Form if all the owners listed on the proof of ownership document are not present in office. This form can also be used if you are registering the vehicle on someone else’s behalf. Instructions for properly filling out the form are provided here.
- An Out-of-Province vehicle inspection if required (see details below)
- An original “Form 1” Canadian import sheet if required (see details below)
Out-of-Province Inspections
An out of province inspection may be required to register a vehicle originating from outside of Alberta.
If your vehicle is less than 4 years old (including the current year) and was last registered to you in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, or Manitoba, it may be exempt from inspection.
Visit any Drayden registry location to confirm if your vehicle requires an out-of-province inspection and, if so, pickup and inspection request form that you will provide your local inspection station. Once the inspection is complete, you have 14 days to provide your out-of-province inspection form to a registry office.
Imported Vehicles
If your vehicle was last registered outside of Canada, you will be required to present the “Form 1” import document that you received from Canada Customs. If the form only contains one stamp, you will need to get a second by visiting a Federal Inspection Stations prior to registering.
If you imported your vehicle through a custom broker your import forms may be electronic and you are exempt from providing this document. Visit one of our Drayden Registry locations to confirm that you are exempt.
