If you do not have your Class 5 licence and/or are a first time driver, you may be required to take a written or road test prior getting your licence. For further information, visit our Learners, Knowledge, & Road Tests page.

Applying for an Alberta Drivers Licence

When visiting one of our Registry offices to obtain an Alberta licence, please bring with you the following:

  • Proof of Alberta Residence
  • Proof of Legal Presence in Canada
  • Alberta Drivers Medical, if:
    – you are over 75 years old
    – you are applying for a Class 1, 2 or 4 licence
    – you have a medical condition that may impede with your capability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • A supporting piece of photo ID, see Acceptable I.D.
  • Out of Province or Out of Country Licence, if moving to Alberta.
    – If you do not have this licence, then you will require a clearance letter from your previous province/country.

Please visit Service Alberta’s website for more information regarding whether or not you are required to pass a driving test & permit test prior to applying for an Alberta Driver’s Licence. Knowledge practice tests are also located on the Service Alberta’s website.
