Drivers Licencing

What do I need to renew my licence?

To renew your licence, you are required to visit us in person with your current Alberta licence. If you currently hold a commercial class licence or have health conditions that could affect your ability to drive, you may be required to provide us with an Alberta Drivers Medical form completed by your Doctor. If your licence has been expired for 6 months or longer, you will also need to provide us with Legal Entitlement and Residency.

How long can my licence be expired before I have to retake my drivers test?

Your licence has to be expired for 3 years or more before you need to retake your knowledge and road test; however, once your licence has been expired for 6 months or more you are required to reprove your legal presence and residency in Alberta.

What do I need to change my licence over to Alberta from another province?

When changing your licence to Alberta from another province you are required to visit us in person with your Out of Province licence, proof of residency in Alberta and proof of legal presence in Canada. If you currently hold a commercial class licence or have health conditions that could affect your ability to drive, you may be required to provide us with an Alberta Drivers Medical form completed by your Doctor.

Check out our Alberta Health Care section for more information on applying for your Alberta Health Coverage while you are in as well.

How do I get a drivers Abstract?

There are multiple ways to request a drivers abstract. You can request one online through your Alberta.ca account or you can visit us in person with valid government photo identification and complete the Request for Personal Driving and Motor Vehicle Information form found under our Printable Forms section.

To request an abstract on behalf someone else, you are required to visit us in person, with valid government photo identification and a completed Drivers Abstract Consent form found under our Printable Forms section. The Drivers abstract consent form must be completed by the individual you are requesting the abstract on behalf of.

If you are requesting an abstract from out of province and do not have an Alberta.ca account, please email us for more information.

Please also see the Getting Your Drivers Licence page which also advises what to do if you have lost your licence.
