Preparing for Potential Water Damage
As communities across Alberta experience increased water levels and drainage concerns, we understand many of our clients may be impacted. If your home or property is affected, taking prompt action can help reduce further damage and support your insurance claim.

What to Do If You Experience Water Damage
Document and Report Immediately
Take detailed photos and videos of all damage and affected belongings before discarding anything. Report your claim as soon as possible so the process can begin and an adjuster can be assigned.
Remove Standing Water (If Safe to Do So)
If it is safe, remove excess water using a submersible pump or wet/dry vacuum. Equipment is often available at local hardware stores.
Begin Drying the Area
Act quickly to dry affected areas by using fans, dehumidifiers and open windows if weather permits.
Remove Damaged Materials
Saturated materials like drywall, carpet, and insulation may need to be removed to prevent further damage such as mold.
Clean and Sanitize
Clean hard surfaces with detergent and water, then disinfect with a bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 5 gallons of water).
What Happens Next?
Once your claim is reported:
- Your insurance company will assign an adjuster
- The adjuster will review the damage and explain your coverage
- They will guide you through next steps, including repairs or replacement
Every policy is different, so your adjuster will confirm what is covered and answer any questions along the way.
Additional Tips to Help Protect Your Property
- Know How to Shut Off Your Water
Locate your home’s main water shut-off valve and ensure everyone in your household knows how to use it. Turning off the water quickly can help prevent further damage in an emergency. - Prioritize Safety First
Never enter standing water if there is a risk of electrical hazard or structural damage. - Move Valuables (If Safe)
If possible, move important items and documents to higher ground to protect them from water damage. - Keep Receipts for Emergency Expenses
Save receipts for anything you purchase to protect your property or begin cleanup, as these may be needed for your claim.
