During a Winter Power Outage
We’re not unfamiliar with winter weather in Alberta but do you know if your insurance covers you in an emergency? Make sure you’re prepared this winter season.
Winter is a beautiful time of year in Alberta, but it also calls for diligence and care. Cold and stormy conditions can strike suddenly and cause power outages. If you aren’t prepared for them, they can be stressful and dangerous.
With a little preparation, however, a power outage can be nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
Let’s take a look at what you should do before, during, and after a winter power outage to keep you, your family, your home and property safe. Our Insurance brokers can provide you with advice and quotes to cover all your needs in Edmonton in the event of a power outage.
Before the outage:
- Consider buying a generator and know how to operate it safely. During a power outage, a generator can run a space heater, water pump if you have a well, your phone and computer chargers, and a few lights.
- Have an alternative heat source such as a wood stove or gas fireplace with sufficient fuel to keep at least one well-ventilated room in the house warm.
- Stock enough non-perishable food, drinking water and medicine to last at least three days. Refrain from opening any fridge and freezer doors to keep food cold and prevent spoilage.
- Fill your bathtub with water for flushing toilets.
- Have flashlights and a portable radio handy with plenty of spare batteries.
- Know how to manually open your garage door and gates if there is no power.
- Unplug sensitive electronic equipment such as TVs, stereos, computers, phones and microwaves to avoid damage if there are power surges.
During the outage:
- Stay warm! Dress in dry thermal layers and be familiar with the symptoms of hypothermia and frostbite. Get medical help as quickly as possible if you suspect either. Keep a close eye on kids (and pets) who may not be able to express their discomfort.
- If the temperature in your home drops considerably, open the taps slightly to avoid frozen pipes.
- If you run out of water, you can melt snow.
- After you’ve ensured your and your family’s safety, check on neighbours and those at risk to make sure everyone is okay.
After the outage:
- Stay away from downed power lines or anything touching them. They could still be live!
- Inspect your home and property for damage. If your home or farm has suffered any damage, Edmonton insurance brokers are there to help.
