Back to School Time – Remember to Slow Down in School Zones

The Importance of Slowing Down in School Zones

School zone speed limits were not created to inconvenience drivers. Instead, they are designed to improve safety around elementary schools and protect young children crossing the roads. During the back to school period in Edmonton, it is important to follow school zone speed limits because:

  • Children aged 10 to 14 are involved in the highest number of pedestrian accidents. Children between the ages of five and 14 are at high-risk for pedestrian-vehicle deaths.
  • Crossing an intersection is the most common cause for a vehicle-pedestrian accident, children running into the street being the second most common cause.
  • If a child is hit by a vehicle, the injuries are life-threatening and could result in permanent injury.
  • Travelling at 50 km/h requires 24 to 28 metres to stop, while travelling at 30 km/h only requires 11 to 13 metres to stop. Reduced driving speeds result in a significant decrease in the severity of injuries to the pedestrian.

A Speeding Ticket in Edmonton May Affect Insurance Premiums

If you are pulled over for speeding in a school zone, you will not only be issued a citation for your actions, but if your vehicle strikes a child, you could face serious penalties and consequences. Auto insurance premiums will also rise accordingly and if it is not your first offence, you could lose driving privileges altogether.

So, starting August 2015, be on the lookout for children walking to and from school and be mindful of the posted speed limit signs for school zones. By doing your part, you can protect children on the road.
